Enquiries can be made by telephone, fax or e-mail to the office of The Society of Analytical Psychology. Applicants are asked to write a personal statement addressed to the Director of the Adult Clinic describing themselves and their reasons for requesting an analysis. These letters are helpful in providing a starting point for the assessment procedure but can be omitted in some cases. Occasionally the Director will ask for further information and may request permission to contact the applicant's general practitioner, psychiatrist or previous therapist. Sometimes referrals are made with the assistance of existing therapists, psychiatrists, general practitioners or others who may be concerned for the applicant.
Before an offer of an appointment with one of the Clinic Directors is made the applicant will be asked if they are willing to attend sessions four times each week for at least a period of two years. It is important to agree to these terms at this stage because there are very few placements available for analytic therapy on the basis of less than four sessions weekly. However in exceptional cases, difficulty in agreeing to these terms before the first consultation may not always mean that the application is refused. Suitable applicants will be offered one or more consultation interviews to evaluate their particular needs and difficulties. They will then be told whether it is considered that analysis is the most appropriate form of treatment. If not, care will be taken to make other suitable recommendations.
